I had a warm blast at Tropical.
I loved the little spritzer bottles and the cool vibe all around the party.
Good seeing so many great people that I knew, even the raider haters. Enjoyed Theory,
Annand and the stylings of Mark E. Quark as well. Nice stuff.
Great crowd, packed house, sweaty, nitty, gritty, fun.
Thank you Mister Annand.

Ben,
You know I'm a Tropical regular and I have my order of favorites:
10/07/02 w/ Heather
10/09/99 w/ Mark Farina
8/10/02 w/ Lady D. (and JT Donaldson)
After last night though, my list has changed. Tropical 02/01/03 is on top and the
others follow.
The downtown L.A. office building/store front (whatever it was) venue was easy to locate
and parking was conveniently close and inexpensive. I appreciated paying only $10
for cover (even though I would have paid $20 for this one). I was comfortable having
only a few security guards (which is normal for Tropical) who were also very pleasant.
I only saw one security guard at the door actually but, I wasn't necessarily
trying to count. On that note, God bless the hassle free
"in's and out's". I don't like feeling trapped in a venue
so, it was a kind to leave when I wanted (gosh, I'm always leaving things in my
car! *wink*) and come back when I needed.
The production was excellent. I liked the minimal lighting, the usual decorative
tropical motifs (spray bottles hanging in buckets overhead, fish situations, I think there
were a few candles floating around, plants, palms, etc.). The sound was
appropriately placed and filled the room well, still leaving enough space to groove.
The monitors in the outhouse/water bar room were a good choice (the dance floor was
going off in there!). The back area smoking room was very cozy, filled
with furniture, ashtrays, and plenty of space to chill.
It was my first time seeing Theory and I was very impressed. He wasn't shy about
opening the party with a bang and turned up the heat right away, as if it was 3a
already. Ben carried the energy and laid down a quality well programmed mix (as
always) which had me stuck to the dance floor until Mark E. Quark. Mark is one of my
favorites and I've never been bored or disappointed by one of his sets. He closed
out the night just right, with a nice blend of eclectic jams that kept me dancing and
smiling to the end. Props to all three of you for sharing your talent and music.
The vibe and energy of the dancers and DJ's made last night very special and so far, my
best party this year. So many friends and familiar faces were in attendance last
night, it was great shuffling around the dance floor sharing energy with you.
Cheers and thank you to Ben, Lisa, Valerie, myself (just because) and everyone who came to
Tropical last night.
Lotsaluv,
Chris G.

Tropical. Fun. Fun. Fun. I danced from the moment I walked in the party
sometime before midnight
until sometime past 4am. Both Ben Annand and Mark E. Quark (the two DJs I made it in
time for)
played excellently and kept my ass shaking throughout. Lots of hollaring... lots of
laughing...
lots of smiles... met some really nice new people... overall, just a really good time and
exactly
what the Doctor ordered. Thanks, Ben. :-) |
